The Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, has made it clear that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government shall be judged by Ghanaians in the 2012 general elections by its deeds, and not by words.
Speaking at an impressive ceremony to cut the sod for the reconstruction of Assin Praso –Ashanti Bekwai Highway, as well as construction of a new bridge over River Pra, at Assin Praso on Tuesday, Vice President Mahama said the beginning of the reconstruction of the road, marked the “Action Year”, as declared by President John Evans Atta Mills last year.
The reconstruction of the road and construction of the new bridge will cost US$100million, and is being funded by grant from the Japanese government.
According to Mr. Mahama, Ghanaians would see massive infrastructure development in the road sector, health, education, agriculture and housing that would transform Ghana’s economy from a developing nation to an emerging economy.
He revealed that government was poised to improve the socio-economic infrastructure to attract private investment into the country, adding that very soon government would cut the sod for work to begin on some major roads across the country.
He mentioned Sawla-Fumse road, Ayamfuri -Dunkwa road, Twifu Praso -Dunkwa road, Eastern and Western Corridor Highways among others.
Additionally, Vice President Mahama said the action year would mean more communities were connected to the national grid in a two year period. 4,500 schools would also be built across the country.
He, therefore, commended the Japanese Government for making funds available for the reconstruction of the road, which is currently in deplorable conditions.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Joe Gidisu said the 60km road from Assin Praso to Ashanti Bekwai formed the major parts of national roads, and that the reconstruction would involve a new two-lane bridge over River Pra, while two-lane and two-way single carriageway with asphalt concrete surfacing, is expected to be completed in August 2013.
He added that a total of 127 old culverts were to be reconstructed, and urged motorists to bear with the contractor, TOKURA Construction Cooperation for the inconveniences.
The Central Regional Minister, Ms Ama Benyiwa Doe appealed to the youth in area, who are likely to be recruited to execute the jobs to justify the opportunity offered them by working hard.
She also urged the chiefs to keep an eagle eye on the equipment of the contractor, so as to avoid pilfering on the part of the youth.
The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Keiichi Katakami, who received a large applause from the crowd, in appreciation for his government making funds available for the project, said the reconstruction of the road would open up economic opportunities in the country, adding that the US$100 million grant was signed in 2009.
The representative of Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Yamachi noted that the reconstruction of the road would boost trading activities with Ghana and its neighbouring countries in the north, such as Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali.
Nana Owudo Aseku X, Chief of Assin Praso, on his part praised the government for taking bold initiative to reconstruct the road, which has fast deteriorated as a result of heavy traffic. He, therefore, called on government to tar roads in Assin North District in the Central Region.
Some foot soldiers of the NDC in the area, who could not hide their joy for the reconstruction of the road and the bridge, burst into jubilation by singing party songs to the amazement of the visitors.
