Agya Koo in bloody road accident?
News broke in Accra yesterday that award-winning film star Agya Koo had been involved in a bloody road accident with the brand new Zoyte sports utility vehicle prize car he recently received from the Ghana Movie Awards.
The report also had it that the ‘Ama Ghana’ leading man might have lost his life; but his management team has told NEWS-ONE what exactly happened.
There was speculation that the said accident might be an assassination plot as tempers were still high over how Agya Koo, at the Ghana Movie Awards, beat all Ghanaian male actors including Majid Michel and John Dumelo to grab the overall Founder’s Merit Awards.
He has since become a subject of envy.
The accident was reported to have occurred at Dzorwulu in Accra. The report indicated that Agya Koo, his wife and a colleague actress, Rose Mensah aka Kyeiwaa were in the car.
NEWS-ONE called Eugene Morrat, a movie producer and member of Agya Koo’s management team, and he explained what exactly happened:
“Yes it is true something happened but not to that extent. He was on the highway when someone drove directly into his vehicle. The guy hit him on the fender but there was no death or any blood as being reported.
“Agya Koo is not dead so people should not panic. He is currently shooting a movie in Accra and the accident vehicle was not even the new price car he won. The price car is intact. The one that was run into belongs to Agya Koo’s wife,” Moratt explained.
On how come Agya Koo beat the likes of Majid Michel, Chris Attoh and John Dumelo to grab the enviable Founder’s Award, NEWS-ONE called Fred Nuamah, CEO of GP Limited, organizers of the Movie Awards.
“The Founder’s Award is more of a meritorious than a competitive one and in the best estimation of the organizers, Akya Koo deserves it. The criteria was simple.
Look, there was a time people did not find it a dignified thing to act in a Ghanaian movie and people would not even invest in it but Agya Koo, during those trying times, did not give up.
“He invested in Ghanaian movies whether there was a market for it or not and continued to act and bring out one movie after another until people started to accept it.
We are not saying he was the only person who singlehandedly held the fort for us but we must be honest enough to admit that when we speak of Ghanaian movies, Agya Koo has contributed his quota in a very significant way and deserves the award,” Mr. Nuamah explained.
Agya Koo, known in private life as Kofi Adu, entered the movie industry in 1999 after making a name for himself as a comedian on the then Key Soap Concert Party.
He was born and raised in Kumasi. He has been married for some 16 years now and has three children.
