Authorities of the University of Ghana, Legon, have sanctioned seven students over the sexual molestation of Amina Haruna, a suspected thief, at the Mensah Sarbah Hall Annex A, popularly called Okponglo.
One student had been dismissed while six others were suspended for two academic years, a statement from the university said.
The Disciplinary Committee of the University, in its investigations into the Amina sexual assault case, recommended a very stern punishment to seven out of the 14 male students standing trial at an Accra Circuit Court over the sexual molestation of Amina Haruna whom they accused of being a serial thief at the Legon campus.
While six of the culprits were rusticated for four semesters (two years) with effect from the 2012 academic year, the seventh person was dismissed outright.
In a press release signed by the Assistant Registrar, F.K. Yeboah, the committee noted that it “found that a number of students played various roles in the sexual assault and molestation of the said Ms. Amina Haruna and the students have been sanctioned accordingly.”
It said, “The following have been suspended from the University for four semesters with effect from the 2011-2012 academic year: Mr. Francis Attah Wiredu (ID: 10286005), Mr. Mark Dickson Kwame Tornu (ID10269875), Mr. Morris Awaregya (ID 10269875), Mr. Jason Boarna Ampomah (ID 10339794), Mr. Benedict Neequaye Broohm (ID 10344635) and Mr. Elijah Tambeog (ID 10351647).”
However, “Mr. Maxwell Kwadwo Frempong has been dismissed from University,” the statement said.
It indicated that “the Vice Chancellor has (since) notified the affected students of the afore-mentioned sanctions.”
The statement however failed to spell out the students’ level of involvement in the sexual assault.
Fourteen students are already standing trial for the same offence at an Accra Circuit Court.
It would be recalled that 25-year-old Amina Haruna was humiliated by male students of the university at the Legon campus when she allegedly stole a laptop computer and an unspecified number of mobile phones belonging to students at the Mensah Sarbah Hall Annex A.
The heinous act was then captured on video and dubbed onto the internet, exposing her nakedness to the whole world, with students fondling her breasts and inserting their fingers into her private parts.
In the early hours of Wednesday March 30, 2011, around 12:45am, Amina was arrested by the students while allegedly trying to bolt with her booty.
She was said to have been handed over to a Legon security man on duty at the hall.
However, the male students of the hall rushed back and snatched Amina from the security man and began to abuse her, stripping her naked and inserting their fingers into her private parts while recording it on video in a very barbaric way.
No amount of plea by the suspected thief could set her free, as her captors were bent on taking their pound of flesh from her.
Eventually, they succeeded in stripping her stark naked revealing her clitoral region after beating her to pulp and shredding her underpants and brassiere.
She was heard loudly on the video, pleading for forgiveness from the rampaging students.
While some of the students tried inserting their fingers into her neatly shaved vagina others used their phones to record the babaric act.
About two of the students and the security men were captured attempting to free her but some also held her thighs widely open for the cameras revealing her genitals, which demeaned her dignity and womanhood.
The Legon Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Frank Anning said Amina was handed over to the police half naked.
He confirmed that there had been earlier complaints against the young lady who was said to be a petty trader on the campus where she sold ladies’ slippers.
She had been arrested twice by the students and handed over to the police for stealing.
Amina was arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court by the Legon Police after investigations into the alleged stealing case against her were completed but she jumped bail.
As a result, the Legon Police sought a bench warrant for her arrest but were unsuccessful until the unfortunate incident.
Amina had since told the press that her engagement to her suitor had been broken due to the unfortunate incident and at a point she wanted to commit suicide.
