Goran Stevanovic defends choice of John Boye over Derek Asamoah

Ghana coach Goran Stevanoic has offered a staunch defence of his decision to take five center backs to the Africa Cup of at the expense of a fourth striker.

The Serbian opted to drop South Korea based Derek Asamoah for Stade Rennes center back John Boye. And with John Mensah, Isaac Vorsah, Jonathan Mensah and Lee Addy all already in the squad, the Serbian has had to answer questions about why he dropped the Asamoah especially when Asamoah Gyan was considered a doubt for the tournament.

Amidst suggestions that Asamoah was dropped over passport issues triggered by GFA protocol officer Alex Asante, Stevanovic has moved to clear the air stating he dropped the player on purely technical grounds.

“I explained about to Derek Asamoah that we had a problem with defence. Vorsah is out for two games, some players are always injured just before a month and we cannot risk to stay without enough defenders. That is the only reason unique reason I dropped Derek. It’s a good, good reason. I explained to Derek and he understood”, Stevanovic said.

Confirmation of Vorsah’s two match suspension means he will miss the games against Botswana and Mali.
