Government gives over 6,000 motorbikes to Assemblymen
Government has procured over 6,000 motorbikes to be distributed to all Assembly members in the country’s Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to help them undertake their daily local government activities.
All the 170 Assemblies across the country have also been given a vehicle each to help in the performance of their duties.
The Vice President, John Dramani Mahama presented the vehicles and the motorbikes to the local government ministry for onward distribution to the Assemblies and the Assembly members across the country on Tuesday July 19, 2011.
The purchase was financed through the District Assemblies Common Fund based on resolutions by the MMDAs themselves.
According to Vice President Mahama, the NDC government is committed to the decentralization process and this is reflected in the procurement of the motorbikes and vehicles.
John Mahama said the presentation was not for personal use but to enhance the local government machinery’s capacity in terms of monitoring, evaluation and service delivery.
“This presentation is to deliver a hundred and seventy vehicles to each MMDA to enhance its capacity in terms of monitoring and evaluation, in terms of service delivery and in terms of being able to move ourselves to monitor the work that the assemblies are doing.
“Government is also providing over six thousand motorbikes to assist each electoral area with a motor cycle to enable the assembly men and women perform their duties well”.
The Vice President charged the various Metropolitan and Municipal District Assembly members to ensure that they use the vehicles and motor cycles given them to the advantage of the District Assemblies.
