Kwamena Ahwoi wades into $1.5 bn ‘galloper saga’

The Hyundai Gallopers
A former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under the first NDC administration, Kwamena Ahwoi, has waded into the debate over the importation of some 110 Gallopers into the country in 1999.
The importation was facilitated by African Automobile Limited and the company has dragged government to court for the abrogation of a contract which it signed with the then National Democratic Congress government.
According to Mr. Ahwoi, the contract was terminated by the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
Ghana now faces a $1.5 billion claim which is interest that has accrued over the period on the $17 million the company incurred for the importation of the vehicles on behalf of government under the said contract.
Prof. Ahwoi in a statement advised that the case be settled out of court or risk paying yet another judgment debt which has become a major issue for discussion in recent times.
