A 29-year-old evangelist of the Power of Jesus Church at Nyanyano at Kasoa, near Accra, has been arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to rape a newly wedded woman at Aboabo near Koforidua.

The suspect, Kwasi Oppong, a well-known evangelist who often preaches in Koforidua, is said to have attempted to rape Mrs Joyce Odame, a 30-year-old trader, at the Amsterdam Hotel at Aboabo.

The victim, who got wedded to a policeman, Lance Corporal Elvis Koomson, just two weeks ago, is said to have gone to the hotel to consult with the evangelist about 10 a.m. Thursday.

At the hotel, the victim is said to have used her mobile phone to call a friend of her husband’s, L/Cpl Emmanuel Mensah, that the evangelist wanted to rape her.

L/Cpl Mensah is reported to have hired a taxicab from the New Juaben Central Police Station Barracks to the hotel, where he bumped into the unlocked hotel room and found the evangelist naked on the bed.

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the New Juaben Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent David Tefutor, said when L/Cpl Mensah entered the room, he made an attempt to effect Evangelist Oppong’s arrest. However, a struggle ensued between the two, during which the suspect was said to have allegedly picked an empty beer bottle and attempted to hit the policeman on the head.

With Mrs Odame’s assistance, L/Cpl Mensah was able to take the bottle from the suspect who, however, succeeded in striking the forehead of the policeman with an unknown heavy object, causing him to bleed profusely.

The suspect was, however, overpowered when some residents of Aboabo went to the hotel room and assisted the policeman to effect Evangelist Oppong’s arrest, after which they sent him to the New Juaben Central Police Station.

Following this, many residents of the New Juaben municipality massed up in front of the police station to catch a glimpse of the suspect, who is very well known to most of the people.
