Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson: Prayers can’t bring peace unless Ghanaians desire same

The Ghanaian electorate has been cautioned that they hold the key to ensuring that Ghana remains peaceful before, during and after the December elections.

Speaking exclusively to Joy News, former Peace Council Chairman, Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson stated that if Ghanaians value peace they must work towards it. Cardinal Turkson who currently chairs the Roman Catholic Church Justice and Peace Committee said people have a right to live in peace.

He said politicians must be driven by a sense of service not the attainment of power or access to wealth.

“Don’t pray for something you don’t want. I mean if the politicians and Ghanaians themselves do not want peace they should not go stand before God and pray; if I were God I would be angry. What do I mean?…You can’t come stand in church and pray for peace when you go and do just what militates against peace; peace should be prepared for, it is not just something simply we pray for,” Cardinal Turkon said.

He said all Ghanaians must recognise that the country had won such enviable reputation for itself that it could not afford to bungle with the December elections.

In another development, women’s rights NGO, the Ark Foundation has been pushing a peace campaign dubbed the Nuisance Project to promote peaceful elections.

The foundation’s Deputy Executive Director, Marian Atta Boahene said some politicians and opinion leaders are complacent about the country’s peace.
