Pregnant Goats expose thieves
The bleating of a distressed pregnant goat at Adaklu-Kodzobi near Ho, gave up a goat stealing syndicate of three, one of whom was tracked and arrested 20 kilometers away by community vigilantes.
The suspect, who identified himself only as Mawuli, has been handed over to the Ho Police.
Mr Emmanuel Nyatsikor, a Community Elder, briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said on Tuesday around midnight a resident saw a taxi moving back and forth in the community suspiciously.
He said the resident’s suspicion was heightened by two shrilling bleats of a goat, which cut through the quiet night. He, therefore, called his two sons and moved to interrogate a visitor lurking around.
Mr Nyatsikor said the visitor’s story of coming with a friend to visit the girl friend did not convince the resident but while he probed further the visitor took to his heels.
He said a chase was futile, as the suspect wrestled out of the grips of one of the sons of the resident and fled into the bushes.
Mr Nyatsikor said following an alarm, a gong-gong was beaten bringing out others who found in the deserted taxicab, number GE 3329 Z the carcass of a pregnant goat, a driver’s license bearing the name of Ametefe Kudzo, a National Health Insurance membership card, a New Testament Bible and a quantity of maize.
Mr Nyatsikor said a check in the direction of loud bleating discovered another goat swathed in a Lacoste T-shirt lying dead and one other pregnant goat struggling to survive.
He said a search team fruitlessly combed the bushes the rest of the night with no trace of the culprits.
Mr Nyatsikor said the police arrived in the day to drive the cab to the police station where Ametefe reported there to claim that he had given the taxi to Mawuli the previous night as a spare driver.
He identified the lacoste shirt as the one Mawuli wore the night he came for the taxi.
Mr Nyatsikor said Mawuli was arrested Wednesday night at around 2000hours at
Adaklu-Agblefe, 20 kilometres away and he confessed to the attempted thefts naming his accomplices only as Michael and Joe all taxi drivers.
He said community members had been reporting theft of goats and that it appeared the modus operandi of the thieves was to bait the goats with corn and then strangle them before cutting their throats.
