Sakawa Female Teacher arrested by police
A 45-year-old female teacher of the Yefri Senior High School (SHS) in the Nkoranza North District of the Brong Ahafo Region has been arrested by the police in Sunyani for allegedly defrauding 24 prospective nursing students to the tune of GH¢31,040.
The suspect, Christiana Mwinsoru, was said to have told her victims that her sister, who is the Principal of the Jirapa Nursing Training School in the Upper West Region, had informed her that some students who were offered admission to the school did not turn up and so she needed replacement.
Her victims, who were desirous of gaining admission to the nursing training college, paid sums of money ranging between GH¢1,000 and GH¢1,750 to the suspect in order to be admitted to the Jirapa Nurses’ Training School.
But the suspect, after collecting the money from her victims between August and October last year, went into hiding until she was arrested at Atebubu on January 5, 2011.
Briefing the Daily Graphic in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent E.M.K. Amoako, said the suspect, who said she was a teacher at the Yefri SHS, was involved in similar cases in Obuasi, Cape Coast and Jirapa.
He said when the suspect was arrested at her hideout and taken to Yefri, a search conducted in her room revealed a number of certificates, testimonials and passport pictures of her victims.
He said during interrogation, the suspect admitted collecting money from some people to help them secure admission to the Jirapa Nurses’ Training College but said the amount involved was GH¢14,140 and not GH¢31,040.
Supt Amoako said the suspect had since been remanded by the Sunyani Magistrate Court “B” for further investigations into the case.
He appealed to those who had fallen victim to the activities of the suspect to come forward and advised the public to be wary of individuals like her who approached them with similar offers.
