Eliminating Fake News towards Covid19 Vaccines

Today, the world’s top priority is to find a vaccine to cure and stop Covid19. As of the time of this writing, there’s still no concrete evidence that we are seeing the light in the tunnel in putting a stop to this pandemic. But as mentioned, scientists and researchers are now on the race to find a vaccine to it.

Research and Studies for Covid-19 Vaccine

Covid-19 actually came from the Coronavirus family. This strain of viruses is what caused the following illnesses:

  • Common Cold
  • Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)
  • Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

As a matter of fact, the virus that caused Covid-19 is closely related to the one that started SARS. And for this reason, scientists have named this virus as SARS-CoV-2. While the development for a vaccine may take years, researchers are using previous research and studies in developing Covid-19 vaccine. The past research on both MERS and SARS vaccines identified to show potential.

These coronaviruses have spike-like structure on its surface which is called as S protein. It is the spike that is creating the crown-like or corona-like appearance, hence how the virus got its name. S protein attached to the surface of human’s cells. The supposedly created vaccine will be targeting this protein to prevent it to bind from other cells and stop it from reproduction.

Challenges in the Development of a Vaccine

Previous studies regarding coronavirus vaccines faced challenges in developing a covid-19 vaccine which includes:

Ensuring Safety of the Vaccine

There are several vaccines made for SARS that have been tried in animals first. Majority of the vaccines increased the survivability of the animals but it did not prevent the spread of infection.

Some of the vaccines even caused implications similar to lung damage. With the vaccine for covid-19, it should be tested thoroughly to ensure it is safe for humans.

Long-Term Protection

After being infected with covid-19, the re-infection with similar virus – though often mild and happens in very few people is feasible after months or even years. What an effective vaccine for the virus is something that should provide long-term protection from the infection.
